1. General information
Low vision is a compulsory, four-month subject, taught in the fourth year of the Degree in Optics and Optometry, in the second quarter. It belongs to the optics and optometry module.
It aims to apply the knowledge acquired in previous subjects, as well as to focus specifically on low vision optometric care.
It reinforces competencies acquired in other subjects and develops aspects of the student such as attention to special populations, in this case the visually impaired.
It is recommended to have taken mainly Optometry I and II, Optometry Laboratory, Ocular Pathology and Pharmacology, and Optometric Technology I.
2. Learning results
Upon completion of this subject, the student will be able to:
Know how to identify the patient with low vision.
Correctly perform the necessary tests to identify the patient with low vision.
Know how to take care of these patients.
Perform the necessary tests to obtain the best optical prescription for these patients.
Perform the necessary tests for the correct adaptation of visual aids that optimize the patient's visual rest.
Perform proper assembly of visual aids.
Know how to perform the necessary tests to confirm that the patient is well adapted to visual aids
Be able to prepare a complete report of low vision and to know how to transmit the functional implications caused by the patient's visual situation in the patient's daily life.
The results of this subject are important because they enable the student to deal with the low vision patient, increase their skills in the optical workshop and develop their social skills.

5. Assessment system
Option A
Regular attendance to practices is a prerequisite for this evaluation modality.
Practical part 30%
Continuous evaluation of the practices (10%) evaluating the elaboration of the reports of cabinet practices, the order and cleanliness with which they are carried out, as well as the care given to the patient.
Continuous evaluation, realization of a guided case with a theoretical-practical character (up to 40%) parallel to the development of the teaching activities of the subject.
Final theoretical-practical exam in June, at the end of the teaching activities of the subject (up to 50%).
Theoretical part 70%
Written exams, questionnaires and exercises (100%)
No part with a grade lower than 4 will be averaged.
Option B
This evaluation modality will be applied when regular attendance to the practices is not possible
Theoretical exam 70%
Practical exam 30%
No part with a grade lower than 4 will be averaged.
